SK Telecom and P1 to Ramp Up Subscriber Growth in 2011

PETALING JAYA 11 Feb , - P1Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd ("P1") and SK Telecom, Korea's largest mobile telco and a major stakeholder of P1, wants to continue growing its subscriber base for both fixed and nomadic broadband in Malaysia this year.

P1's current subscriber base is predominantly on its fixed wireless broadband services. While the company expects to continue growing this segment in 2011, it will expand its focus to grow market share in the nomadic broadband segment on the back of wider coverage and a more robust network. As part of the strategy to help accelerate customer acquisition, P1 will be introducing innovative packages and devices at competitive prices to clearly differentiate it from the competition for both segments. P1 also plans to launch a new marketing campaign this quarter to kick things off.

SK Telecom's envoy to P1, Dr Ahn Hoekyun, who is the Chief Strategy Officer and Deputy CEO of P1, said, "We see a significant window of opportunity now to further solidify our leadership position in Malaysia as the top 4G broadband provider. P1 is the only broadband provider in Malaysia capable of catering to users requiring high data capacity as well as high speed wireless connection at great value for money."

In light of pricing trends in the nomadic market, Dr Ahn foresees slight erosion to P1's ARPU. Nevertheless, he explained that the nomadic segment offers huge potential as this segment has outgrown home broadband in the past two years globally, coupled with the fact that Malaysia's wireless broadband population penetration still has ample room to grow.

On competitive advantage, Michael Lai, P1 CEO said, "P1 is offering the best value wireless broadband for a rich media experience, and continues to be the largest 4G operator in the nation with a first mover advantage in the 4G space. P1 has gone through steep learning curves over the past two years, and will continue to learn and improve so that our consumers can enjoy P1 4G broadband services at reasonable prices."

Six months into partnering with SK Telecom, P1 achieved a key milestone of 280,000 subscribers in early January this year, adding approximately 56,000 subscribers to its network in the last quarter of 2010. The company achieve this highest subscriber surge in its history while continuing to positively manage its churn rate.

"SK Telecom is glad to be part of the rapid growth of broadband in Malaysia and will work closely with P1 to sustain a robust network and to develop winning go-to-market strategies," Dr Ahn concluded.

SK Telecom is recognized as one of the most innovative technology companies in the telecom industry. The company has introduced an array of network technology and services and continues to unveil world's firsts. SK Telecom was the first to launch and commercialize CDMA, 2.5 CDMA2000 1x, 3G CDMA EV-DO, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA (on handsets), Satellite DMB (on handsets) and various other mobile technologies.
