P1 W1MAX - Press Releases

02 April 2009

Malaysia's leading WiMAX operator is first to launch full WiMAX service outside Klang Valley and on the mark to meet 35% population coverage by 2009 target

GEORGETOWN, PENANG - Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. ("P1") Malaysia's first and leading WiMAX telco today launched its 4G high-speed wireless broadband service P1 W1MAX in Penang, barely eight months after the service was first launched in Klang Valley in August 2008.

P1's network expansion to Penang and the successful commercial launch of the P1 W1MAX service today marks another milestone in the WiMAX telco's pursuit to hit its targeted 35% nationwide population coverage within 2009.

In conjunction with the launch, P1 also launched the P1 P1tstop customer service and sales centre. In addition to serving eager P1 W1MAX customers in Penang, the one-stop centre, located in Bay Avenue, will also function as a hub for P1's northern region operations.

"I commend P1's aggressive network and sales rollout. Today's P1 W1MAX launch in Penang marks a very important milestone for the ambitious operator in pursuit of its noble mission to provide ubiquitous high-quality broadband for all," said Penang Chief Minister, Y.A.B. Lim Guan Eng who officiated the launch ceremony held at Bay Avenue.

P1's Penang launch also marks the progression of the WiMAX@Penang initiative first announced late last year. In September 2008, the Penang State Government and P1 entered into a partnership whereby P1 would deploy the infrastructure for WiMAX@Penang under the Wireless@Penang initiative.

There are 3 characteristics in this Wireless@Penang effort:-

  • It is 100% private sector driven with nearly no or minimal costs put in by the state government;
  • There are no rights to exclusivity and all qualified and recognised industry players are welcome in the interests of promoting competition;
  • The Penang state government will provide equal facilitation to install their services for those who are as partners of Wireless@Penang project.

"This is also an historic day for Penang as we come closer to realising our mission of transforming this glorious state into a world class business and tourism hub fully connected to the Internet with ubiquitous access to high-quality broadband for all walks of life." The Chief Minister added.

The first phase of WiMAX@Penang project started in October 2008, with the deployment of P1 base stations to cover areas around Georgetown and parts of Seberang Prai. In January 2009, prior to today's launch, P1 had successfully conducted a P1 W1MAX test-drive where a large number of Penang residents previewed the superior performance of wireless broadband via WiMAX technology.

"Our decisions are guided by those who are very important to us our customers. Our openness and diligence in putting to action what the consumer want is the key to our success for now and in the future. In that respect, today, P1 is simply giving Penang what its people wants, that is, a reliable high-quality, high-performance, affordable broadband service." said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1.

At launch, P1 W1MAX is available across a large portion of Penang's business and lifestyle hotspots, including various areas in and around Georgetown, Gurney Drive, Jalan Burma, Jalan Kebun Bunga, Jalan Free School, and Pengkalan Weld as well as key areas on the state's mainland including Butterworth, Kampung Jawa, Kampung Perlis, Kampung Bengali.

P1 aims to have over 50 sites up and running in Penang across the coming months to ensure that the P1 W1MAX service availability is well up to the task of meeting the expected demand for the affordable, high-performance wireless broadband on the island.

"P1 is proud to be able to play an integral part in Penang's progression to becoming a truly world class state. With the superior performance of WiMAX, our innovative product offerings and our attractive prices, I am confident that P1 will win many fans in amongst the net savvy residents of Penang. With that in mind, I am eager to meet their demands with the rapid deployment of the P1 W1MAX network over many more areas in Penang in the very near future. " Michael Lai concluded.

The WiMAX@Penang project is a component of the state government's move to transform Penang into an "i-Land" a pursuit to make the island state Malaysia's first WiFi state by 2010.
